The beginning of 2024 was not the nicest of Rory McILroy.

While his drought from his last major has a decade, his performance from top to bottom on the course was associated with gaming rumors. A below-expected performance at The Players last March was accompanied by a poor finish at the Masters as the final stage of his career, the Grand Slam, continues to elude him.

But even with his failed return to the Tour Policy board and rumored “tension” over his friendship with Tiger Woods, McIlroy looked set to have a great week after winning back-to-back events at the Zurich Classic with Shane Lowry, then again at Wells. Fargo Championship Sunday. However, that all changed with the shock announcement on Tuesday that McIlroy was filing for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll – the latest twist in what the Irishman may have to forget for a year.

2024 hasn’t been the easiest year for Irish golfer Rory McIlroy on and off the course. Just a few weeks ago he was having problems on tour and at major championships. That led to Tuesday: when it was announced that he was divorcing his wife Erica Stoll.

On the course, McIlroy turned in a performance at the Players that was eleven shots behind the winner, Scottie Scheffler.

He finished in the top-20, but he was never truly a contender in the tournament that he won back in 2019 and was one of the favorites to win this year. That was followed by a terrible performance at the Masters that players had to keep an eye on.

He finished tied for 22nd and led the tournament at 4-over par, 15 strokes behind leader Scheffler.

It wasn\’t just in the majors that McIlroy was struggling. Up until three weeks ago, he had just one top-five finish on the PGA Tour and had earned less than Scottie Scheffler\’s caddie, Ted Scott. This led him to make a number of changes before and after the Masters, which, fortunately for him, led to a reversal of his dominance on the track. First, he won the Zurich Classic team tournament at TPC Louisiana with playing partner Shane Lowry, defeating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff.

Then, last Sunday, he capped a dominant performance at Quail Hollow Club — a course he has won multiple times before — by beating runner-up Xander Schauffele by five strokes for his first stroke play singles victory of the year.
