Don’t expect Tiger Woods to be the next Ryder Cup captain.
The PGA of America will hold a press conference at noon Tuesday in New York’s Nasdaq Building to announce the captains of the next U.S. Ryder Cup team, which will compete at Bethpage Black in September 2025. But Tiger Woods, a predicted candidate to lead the red, white and blue, will not be revealed, sources told Golf Digest. According to some retail sales points, Woods would have disabled proposals. Sports Illustrated and The Telegraph first reported the news. With Woods out of the lineup, Stuart Cink, Fred Peirce and Davis Love III are potential captaincy candidates.
Captains are typically named 20 months before the Ryder Cup, and Europe has already brought back 2023 championship captain Luke Donald. The 48-year-old Woods has been linked to the position and has always expressed an interest in it, and outgoing PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh also confirmed his organization is in discussions with Woods about the position. But Woods said he wasn’t sure he would have enough time to fulfill his responsibilities.
“Whether I have the time or not, I’m still evaluating what that would look like,” Woods said at the PGA Championship in May. “I\’m dedicating so much time to what we\’re doing with the PGA Tour, I don\’t want to not fulfill the role of the captaincy if I can\’t do it.”

Woods was referring to his roles on the boards of the PGA Tour and PGA Tour Enterprises, along with his position on the tour\’s transaction team, all of which have been focused on the tour’s potential deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
“What that all entails and representing Team USA and the commitments to the PGA of America, the players, and the fans and as I said, all of Team USA,” Woods continued. “You have to feel like you can give it the time it deserves.”
The 2025 Ryder Cup kicks off at Bethpage Black on Sept. 26. Although Europe is the defending champion, the United States has won three of the last four Ryder Cups held in the United States.
