Believe it or not, Tiger Woods has been playing in the PGA Championship for a quarter century.
PGA Championship is the only player who did not play in the amateur era because the PGA championship is the only major championship that introduces only professional players. Since Tiger became a professional 18 days after the end of the 1996 edition, the first edition he was qualified was in Wingdovet in 1997, comparable to the 29th.
Including that first appearance, Woods has made 22 starts at the PGA Championship, including this most recent start at Southern Hills.
And while it took him quite a while to miss a cut at the tournament he’s won four times, it’s happened a lot more in recent years. As mentioned, Tiger made his PGA Championship debut in 1997. Woods was tied for fifth after three rounds at Winged Foot, but fell to the bottom of the leaderboard on Sunday. The following year, he tied for 10th at Sahalie Country Club.
He then scored the first of four PGA Championship victories at Medina the following year, fending off 19-year-old Sergio Garcia in a wild Sunday showdown between two young players. Woods also won in 2000, and then won back-to-back tournaments in 2006 and 2007.
Tiger hasn’t played every year, but he played on the weekend in each of his first 13 starts. Woods missed the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills due to foot surgery after his astounding victory at Torrey Pines in the U.S. Open.

Tiger missed the cut for the PGA Championship for the first time in his career in 2011. His start at the Atlanta Athletic Club, in just his second since returning from a lengthy injury layoff, didn’t go well: He opened his round with a seven-under-score 77, followed by a three-under-score 73 to finish at 10-over, six strokes from the cut line.
Since then, he’s missed three weekends. At Valhalla in 2014, Woods shot two shots in the 74s on a par-71 track but fell five strokes short. The following year at Whistling Straits, Tiger returned home early again after shooting rounds of 75 and 73 on the par-72 layout, two shots too many.
Woods’ 2019 major championship season got off to a strong start with a victory at the Masters, but he missed the cut at the PGA Championship a month later, shooting 72-73 at the par-70 Bethpage Black to miss the weekend of a simple. stroke. Tiger’s only top-10 finish since 2009 was a runner-up finish at Bellerive Country Club in 2018, when he finished two strokes behind Brooks Koepka after a final-round 64th. Woods missed the PGA Championship in 2016, 2017 and 2021 due to various injuries.
As for his status at Southern Hills, he was in danger of missing another shot after shooting a 4-over 74 in the first round. But he came back with a strong 1-under 69 in the second round to see off the weekend. Tiger withdrew after the 99th tour after the third round.
