Woods had been the crushing favorite to be the next Captain of the USA team, after having made eight appearances as a player, while Bradley admitted that he did not even know that he was even in consideration for the role until ‘To what it is called by the departure of PGA of America SEO SETH WAUGH and Johnson last month.
\”I answered it [the call] and he had some pretty incredible news that I had no clue was coming,\” Bradley told the media. \”Zach Johnson is the one who told me that I was going to be the Ryder Cup captain in 2025. “I think that speaks to the type of person and character Zach Johnson is, and I have a lot of respect for him. He was one of my idols when I first joined the PGA Tour. I’m sorry he had to go through what he had to go through, but I’m so honored that he reached out to me.
The press conference confirming Bradley’s appointment included a statement from Woods, read by PGA Senior Director Julius Mason, in which the 15-time major champion explained his reasons and asserted that he still hopes to be captain of Team USA in the future.
“Given my new responsibilities on the (PGA) Tour and the time that comes with it, I felt I would not be able to dedicate the time necessary to Team USA and the players as captain,” the press release stated. “That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t want to captain the team in the future. When the time is right, I will support the decision of this committee.”
Bradley said he spoke with Woods before accepting the job, which would make him the youngest American player to serve as Ryder Cup captain since Arnold Palmer in the 1960s, while the six-time PGA Tour winner is open to the former world No. 1 being part of his team. “Tiger and I have talked a lot,” Bradley added. “Tiger has always helped me so much. His voice was so nice to hear and he reached out to help me out, which was great.
“With Tiger, I told him he could be as involved as he wanted. We have never spoken about vice-captaincy, I have never spoken to anybody about vice-captaincy. We players all respect Tiger and his opinion is very important to us. “Being in the team rooms with Tiger, the public doesn’t realize how important it is to him. This is all. He lives and breathes this.
“I think it shows how much he cares that he gave up the position because he felt he couldn’t handle all of his responsibilities with what’s going on with the PGA Tour.”
Stuart Cink and Fred Perth, who served as vice captains under Johnson in 2023, were seen as likely candidates, but former Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley was shocked by Bradley’s surprise appointment. “I think it’s a surprise to everyone involved in the game of golf,” said McGinley, who will be Donald’s strategic adviser at next year’s event. “If you gave me five or six options for the next captain, if it wasn’t Tiger, I don’t think Keegan would be one of them. “It’s a big leap of faith on their (PGA of America) part. He’s 38, so obviously very young to be a Ryder Cup captain. Usually people pick guys 10 years older, so we’ll have to wait and see.” “He’s a very passionate guy, a good guy, a popular guy. He’s got a big heart. He would undoubtedly bring vibrancy and energy as captain, which would get the crowd fired up, so I can understand the logic behind it. “What’s amazing is that he went from being a player and potential team member last year to being a captain, given how young and inexperienced he is.”
