Tiger Woods Not Ruling Out Future USA Ryder Cup Captaincy After Rejecting 2025 Offer

Tiger Woods has opted out of competing in the 2025 Ryder Cup but didn’t rule out serving as U.S. captain at a future Ryder Cup tournament.

“Given my new responsibilities on the tour and the associated time constraints, I felt I would not be able to devote the time necessary to the U.S. national team and players as captain,” Woods said in a statement read on his behalf by PGA of America senior director Julius Mason (via Sean Leahy of Yahoo Sports). \”That does not mean I wouldn\’t want to captain a team in the future. If and when I feel it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide.\”

Despite no longer being the preeminent talent in golf, the 15-time major champion remains in a class by himself in terms of star power. Many fans were hoping he’d play in the next Ryder Cup.

Woods acknowledged in May that it had been talked about. “We are still in discussions,” he told reporters. “Nothing has been confirmed yet. We are always working on his appearance -if I have the time I do. \ “

In addition to the eight rider cut competition, Woods was a vice captain when the United States broke the European Golf Club Hashitin in 2016. In the next fall, he led the United States.

Instead, Keegan Bradley will take the reins.

As Woods alluded to, he has assumed a larger leadership role within the PGA Tour amid its protracted merger with LIV Golf. The 48-year-old was named vice-chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises in March.

The Telegraph reported in May that ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV might prevent Woods from accepting a permanent role on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. A decision will likely be made before the 2027 Ryder Cup, at which point the golf legend may become a more realistic possibility as captain of Team USA.
