Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have made same Ryder Cup decision for very different reasons
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy have both turned down the opportunity to be Ryder Cup captains in recent years, but the golf icons have very different reasons for doing so.
In the future, golf fans could see a showdown between McIlroy and Woods as captains of Team Europe and Team USA, respectively. But that seems unlikely after both players explained why they’re not ready to accept the prestigious award. Woods has decided not to serve as captain of the U.S. national team in the upcoming Ryder Cup, citing other commitments. “Given my new responsibilities on the (PGA) Tour and the associated time constraints, I felt I would not be able to devote the time to the U.S. national team and players as captain,” Woods said in a statement released by the PGA of America on Tuesday. Although he turned down the role for 2025, he hinted he might consider it in the future. “That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like to captain the team in the future. If and when I think the time is right, I will throw myself into the ring for this committee to make a decision.
On the other hand, McIlroy was a leading candidate to captain Team Europe at the 2027 or 2029 Ryder Cup. However, he says he is also considering turning down the opportunity, believing the role requires “too much”. Job\”.
Woods\’ days as a player at the Ryder Cup are behind him at this stage of his career. McIlroy, on the other hand, simply does not want to jeopardize playing in the competition for many years to come. “Too much work,” McIlroy said. “I saw Luke (Donald) getting ready for the trip to Rome. You can’t be as good a captain as you need to be and play at the same time.

“It’s been mentioned before, and I said, ‘Absolutely not.’ If you want to be the best captain you can be, you can’t play. And if you want to be the best player you can be, you can’t be a captain. It’s one or the other, especially with how big the Ryder Cup is and how much you have to do leading up to the event, the week of the event.”
After Woods turned down the next Ryder Cup role, it was revealed that Keegan Bradley would take the reins as captain of Team USA. It was a big change following Bradley’s absence from the 2023 Ryder Cup, but the 38-year-old expressed deep gratitude for the appointment.
“I am incredibly humbled and honored to be captain of a Ryder Cup-winning United States team,” Bradley said. \ “While in the Rider Cup team, your life will change your life forever. Being in the room with these people, and the strong pressure from this tournament will change you. \ “
