Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and other popular players fail to qualify for the Scottish Open

No big names will be playing over the weekend. Ludvig Oberg will be playing and will be leading Antoine Rosner by one stroke going into moving day. Sungjae Im and Matteo Manassero are 10-under, and six golfers are 9-under.

While many succeeded at the Renaissance Club, some guys flat-out struggled. Fewer than three players scored the most points and players who scored more points were sent home. Who are the guys who graduated earlier this week? Let’s take a look at the most popular names who didn’t qualify for the Scottish Open.

The Most Popular PGA Tour MCing Players at the Scottish Open

— Luc Donald (68-70; -2)
—Hideki Matsuyama (71-67; -2)
—Jordan Spieth (71-68; -1)
—Rickie Fowler (73-71; +4)
—Justin Rose (69-72; +1)
— Padraig Harrington (70-71; +1)
— Will Zalatoris (71-71; +2)
—Denny McCarthy (73-74; +7)
—Keith Mitchell (69-70; -1)

A lot of these guys didn’t play that bad, but at three under it wasn’t good enough. When you sleep, both Fowlers return home early, which is surprising. Former Texas Long Horn did not play poorly last week, but could not find him in Scotland.

Mitchell seemed to be there and found a way to miss him by just a few shots. McCarthy had a good week at John Deere but that momentum didn’t carry over to the Scottish Open. He struggled, with only four players scoring the same or lower.

Rose and Matsuyama were also surprising, as both players tend to do well in this tournament. There was little Zalatoris himself could do: One might suspect his back was still bothering him, but there was no way to be sure. With fewer than 10 players, or even more, the pack needs to keep up the pace, and these guys didn’t, which is why they ended up going home early. The next British Open Championship will also be held in Scotland, so some people will start preparing early.
