Garcia Ends Title Draft at LIV Golf Andalusia
Local favorite Sergio Garcia beat Indian Anirban Lahiri in a playoff at LIV Golf Andalusia to claim his first professional win in four years.
The Spaniard shot a 66 in the final against Valderrama’s Real Madrid to finish within seven strokes of Lahiri, who was in the lead that day, and tied at five under par. A short putt on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff was enough for Garcia to claim his first LIV victory and the £3.15 million prize money.
“Definitely (one of the highlights of my career),” Garcia said. He said it was a big Sunday for Spanish sport, saying: “Not only that, but Carlos won. Alcaraz won today [at Wimbledon]. “I hope Spain wins tonight. It’s going to be an incredible weekend. But I played a lot in the playoffs. It is just a hard hole. But I’m very happy.
Garcia is even more satisfied because Spain’s victory over England in the Euro 2024 soccer final came at the right time, marking a significant achievement for the country.
Garcia’s most recent victory came at the 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship.
England\’s Tyrrell Hatton finished third, a shot back from the leaders on four under, with American Patrick Reed and South Africa\’s Louis Oosthuizen tied for fourth on three under.
\”I felt pretty gutted for Lahiri,\” Hatton said. \ “I was a little ashamed of the 18th green with the crowd because I wanted to beat Sergio.
\ “I think everyone thought it would be there, and unfortunately, they had to participate in the playoffs. \”
