John Ram can be dangerous to miss the 2025 rider Cup because he could lose his map of the world round of DP. I haven’t been able to play any tour events, so yeah, we’ll have to work that out… I haven’t paid [the fine] yet, but again, I don’t know when I’ll be playing,” Jon Rahm said (via Mirror).
“Hopefully I’ll be able to play the Spanish Open. At this point, I’m still waiting to see what happens with my wife and daughter, I don’t know if I’ll be able to play. So my fall is still a little bit of a question mark when it comes to playing golf.”
Unlike the American team, all members of the European Ryder Cup team must be on the DP World Tour. Jon Rahm secured his tour card for the current season, but he could lose it next year for violating the rules of tournament participation. This rule violation means that Jon Rahm will have to pay a fine if he wants to keep his card.
It is not yet clear how much Rahm will have to pay, but his compatriot Sergio Garcia had to pay more than $900,000 in fines when he found himself in a similar situation. DP World Tour rules state that members must apply for an exemption to play in a tournament on another tour if it overlaps with a European Tour event.
If the exemption is not granted, the player cannot play in another round. If a player violates this rule, the system can fine them up to $100,000. Fines come with disqualification for up to eight tournaments.
Jon Rahm and the rest of the DP World Tour players who play LIV Golf events (most notably Tyrrell Hatton), must pay the tour’s fine for each tournament they miss.
Rahm and Hatton have played 10 LIV Golf events, and most of them have coincided with DP World Tour events. Rahm also has one more rule to follow: play at least four DP World Tour events per season – failing to meet this minimum could mean losing his tour card.
