Rory McIlroy soaked up some sun alongside wife Erica Stoll on the heels of his early exit from The Open.
McIlroy suffered through a miserable couple of days at Royal Troon before missing the Open cut, finishing 11 over-par through 36 holes and five shots below the cut line. The 35-year-old’s rounds of 78-74 mark the worst two-round total he’s recorded at a major since the 2013 Open Championship, in which he was sent home early following rounds of 79-75.
But McIlroy appeared to swiftly put his poor performance in Scotland behind him, as he and Stoll soon after flocked to Portugal for a family vacation with their daughter, Poppy. Exclusive photos obtained by Mirror US Sports showed the married couple enjoying some quality time together on the beach, with each seen donning their wedding rings.
Ahead of last month’s US Open, McIlroy and Stoll decided to scrap the divorce petition that they filed in May, appearing to have overcome whatever issues were affecting their relationship in the past. Several days later, the Northern Irishman suffered an agonizing defeat at Pinehurst No. 2, blowing a two-shot lead over eventual champion Bryson DeChambeau with five holes remaining.
As McIlroy’s major woes continue to persist, his former agent Andrew ‘Chubby’ Chandler speculated that the golfer’s uncharacteristic struggles could be attributed to his “messy” personal life.
“Looking from the outside, and I haven’t seen Rory for a couple of years, but to me it looks like his life is messy,” he told talkSPORT. “You know what it’s like as a sportsman, you have to have total focus and keep your mind on what you’re doing.
“But it looks like Rory has spent a year and a half fighting LIV for the PGA Tour, then the PGA Tour pulled the rug from under him, then he started talking about LIV not being too bad, then he had his marriage problems, and then he’s got such media scrutiny because he hasn’t won a major in ten years. So he just can’t get away from it. I think his life is really messy.”

McIlroy and Stoll jetted out of Prestwick Airport early Saturday morning and touched down in Faro. The couple soon after headed to Almancil on the Algarve to spend some much-needed time away from the greens and fairways.
Ahead of The Open Championship, McIlroy expressed a desire to enjoy life more. “I need to take a step back and appreciate what I’ve done in my career and in my life and enjoy my success,” he told The Telegraph. “I don’t really enjoy my success – and I haven’t I would say for the last five. I haven’t been on a vacation in probably four or five years. So I think just stepping back and enjoying myself a little bit more away from my game is the thing. Have some fun
McIlroy was spotted heading to the beach alongside Stoll and Poppy. Ahead of the US Open, he divulged that keeping his marriage intact was the best decision for his family. “Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together,” he told the Guardian. “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

A close-up image showed off Stoll’s luxury engagement ring, which was valued at $650,000 when McIlroy proposed in 2015. The pair officially tied the knot in 2017 and have been married for seven years.
