In recent years, sporting events have lacked title excitement. However, the 2021 championship saw a fierce competition between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen that has since been followed by an ongoing Red Bull team dominance in F1.
This year, there have been some notable differences. To begin with, McLaren has started to challenge the titleholders and Lando Norris in particular proved to be a tough opponent for Verstappen. Furthermore, Ferrari managed to secure wins in both Australia (with the absence of Dutchman) and Monaco as Red Bull did not perform well that weekend.
It is now time for Mercedes to assert themselves as serious contenders once more. Although George Russell was able to capitalize on the collision between Verstappen and Norris in Austria, it was Hamilton who truly earned his victory at Silverstone – marking his first F1 win in 945 days.
The idea of four teams vying for victory in numerous races and eight potential winning drivers is truly tantalizing. This topic was discussed by Brundle in his Sky Sports column, where he conveyed his overwhelming enthusiasm for the prospect.
Summing up the Silverstone race, the ex-Formula One racer stated that Verstappen suffered a lack of speed on dry tarmac during initial stages and speculated he may only secure fifth or sixth place. Despite this setback, with collaboration from his engineer and effective utilization of fresh hard tyres towards the end – Verstappen took charge to pursue Norris and Hamilton.
With Norris struggling to maintain handling balance on the soft tyres, he was easily dispatched by Hamilton. As lap 52 came to an end and the chequered flag unfurled, a euphoric crowd cheered as Hamilton closed in within one-and-a-half seconds of victory.

Max was not among the four divers who felt they should have won the race. Instead, he happily settled for second place and further expanded his championship lead by a significant 84 points. However, it’s worth noting that one of the other drivers did manage to secure victory in impressive fashion.
In the last 14 laps, Hamilton effectively maintained his tyres and successfully thwarted his long-time rival to snag his ninth triumph at Silverstone. It marked nearly two decades since he claimed victory in F1 and pushed his career record to an impressive tally of 104 wins alongside 199 podium finishes.
He clinched the sixth victory out of a total of 12 races held this season, which is significantly more than last season’s three winners. It goes without saying that we can expect a thrilling and profound F1 racing experience in the next 18 months before ushering in new cars in 2026.
