On the 18th green at the Oakland Hills North Course, Charlie Woods – Tiger Wood’s teenage son – shook hands with his playing partners before covering his face with a cap. This all took place in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

In the U.S. Junior Amateur tournament, Woods earned his spot and shot a score of 12-over 82 on Monday.

“After the rough round, Tiger Woods informed his son’s caddie that he had still qualified,” was stated by him.

Luke Wise, the caddie said, “I keep telling him that.”

Last month in Coral Springs, Florida, Woods secured his position among the best junior golfers from across the globe by winning his qualifier with a score of 1-under-par 71.

He will need a remarkable performance on Tuesday at the Oakland Hills South Course, famously dubbed “The Monster” by Ben Hogan. Only then can he secure a spot among the 64 top scorers from an extensive field of 264 players representing 40 states and 35 nations.

Nobody else in the world can relate to being Tiger Woods’ son quite like Charlie Woods, and he has now experienced firsthand what it feels like to compete under intense scrutiny.

Charlie and his dad drew an impressive crowd at the championship match, with about 100 people awaiting them on the first tee. Throughout their game, they were closely followed by a similar number of spectators for several hours – quite noteworthy for an event that typically draws just a few hundred attendees.

Initially, six members were designated from Oakland Hills to aid in managing the crowd. However, their presence proved inadequate and thus ten additional men were sent over to grasp ropes for creating some distance between the players – including Tiger- along with the spectators.

A fan picked Charlie’s tee, embellished with a palm tree, from the ground as a souvenir after he hit his shot on the seventh hole.

“If his dad could speak to him, he would likely encourage him to calm down,” stated John Pinch from Warren, Michigan who is 35 years of age. “I get the impression that there’s a lot of pressure on him.”

One can perceive that he is feeling very low about himself.

Charlie could not conceal his frustration, as he vigorously pounded the clubs into the ground and swung them carelessly after missing shots. He also shook his head from side to side in disappointment.

Rules prevented his father from coaching him during the tournament, leaving him feeling relatively helpless.

Tiger remained silent towards his son and didn’t make eye contact after a short conversation on the practice green. He observed from afar while enclosed by police officers, one of whom took photos, and security personnel.

Tiger definitely desired for his son to hear him on the 181-yard, par-3 fourth.

Charlie was granted relief by a rules official after his ball came to rest on a metal cap situated on the right-hand side of the green.

Tiger said, standing far away from his son so that he couldn’t hear, “He receives one club length.”

Tiger desired his son to position the ball towards the left, however Charlie chose to opt for relief on the right.

To himself, Tiger murmured insistently “Not this way, not this way. Choose the opposite direction.”

On the fourth hole, Charlie scored his initial double bogey out of five, accompanied by four bogeys and two birdies – acquired on both par 5s.

Off the tee, he was uncontrollable – frequently veering to the right. Moreover, his attempts at getting out of dense rough fell short multiple times via flop shots and some approaches overshot the greens altogether.

At the age of 14, Tiger achieved his first U.S. Junior qualification and managed to progress up until the semifinals stage. The following year, he secured a victory in his initial U.S. Junior tournament and eventually clinched three consecutive wins – making him the sole athlete to accomplish this feat in history.

Following his highest 36-hole score as a professional at the British Open which resulted in him missing the cut for a third consecutive time in a major, Tiger journeyed from Scotland to suburban Detroit.
