According to sportnews.zululion.com, Xander Schauffele vowed that Tiger Woods would regret turning down his offer to be his personal coach in a video.
As Tiger Woods fails to make the cut for a third consecutive major, golf enthusiasts are now evaluating potential contenders who can succeed him as the leading force in the game after two decades.
Throughout Woods’ reign as the top golfer, numerous individuals have attempted to challenge his dominance for the crown. Among them is Phil Mickelson who has won six majors compared to Woods’ 15 and remains one of his most formidable opponents.
Rory McIlroy, the young prodigy who quickly achieved four victories, has experienced a significant slowdown in his progress over the past decade.
Jordan Spieth experienced a prolonged dry spell after securing three victories in the mid-2010s.
LIV Golf now boasts the presence of Brooks Koepka, who holds five titles, as well as Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm with two each. All three have previously held the position of world No 1 but are currently forging new paths at LIV Golf.
In 2020 and 2021, Collin Morikawa made quite the entrance by winning both his debut PGA Championship and The Open. This impressive accomplishment has many speculating that he is Woods’ successor.
Scottie Scheffler has exhibited extraordinary dominance on the PGA Tour over the past two years.
Scheffler has achieved an impressive record this year, with six tour wins including two Masters victories and consecutive Players Championships. This makes him only the fourth player in history to reach this milestone within a season, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Woods did it back in 2009.
To cut to the chase, although all of the mentioned golfers are excellent and demonstrate that the sport’s future is bright with or without Woods, it may be argued that the individual who claimed victory at Royal Troon this past week is actually most worthy of taking over his throne.
During the week, Schauffele displayed an outstanding performance in golf. However, it was on the last day that he truly shone brightly when he achieved consecutive birdies on holes six and seven. He then proceeded to take a substantial lead over his competitors by garnering four more birdies in only six holes along the back nine range.
Despite being a prominent figure in the sport for some time now, this 30-year-old had struggled to secure major victories up until recently. While he boasts an impressive nine PGA Tour wins and even clinched gold at the postponed Olympic Games three years ago, it wasn’t until this year that he achieved success on grander stages.
Schauffele had long been labeled as golf’s “almost-man,” having achieved 12 top-10 finishes at major events, six of which were in the top five spots and two being tied for second place.
The 2024 Schauffele victory carries a special significance, particularly in light of his ability to stave off the charging Bryson DeChambeau – as Rory McIlroy can attest, that’s no easy feat. With this impressive performance at the PGA Championship in May, Schauffele secures his first major triumph.
At Valhalla, Schauffele required a birdie at the par-five 18th hole to claim victory and bypass a play-off. He managed to sink it from six feet away, securing his win with an impressive score of 21 under – officially marking the lowest recorded 72-hole score in men’s major history.
“After Schauffele’s second major win, which came just two months after his first, Sky Sports’ Dame Laura Davies attributed his success to holing that putt at Valhalla,” she stated.
He emerged victorious at Valhalla because he displayed greater aggression on the final day. Prior to this, he appeared content with simply performing well rather than actively seeking a win.
Had he not emerged victorious at Valhalla, he would still be trapped in the predicament of being considered one of the world’s top players without a major win.
“Releasing all the pressure, he has now ascended to No. 2 in the world…we are bound to witness more of him moving forward.”
According to Schauffele, his newfound confidence and composure during the final stretch at Royal Troon were vital factors that led to his victory on the last day.
He stated that his triumph in the initial round was extremely beneficial during the latter half of his game. The sense of tranquility he experienced proved to be valuable on a challenging back nine, which has been one of the toughest stretches he had ever played at a championship.
He stated that during major championship competitions, there are highly tense moments. He admitted to experiencing such pressure in previous attempts he did not succeedin and allowing it to affect him.
Today, I believe that I effectively navigated through the difficulties when it was necessary.
“I’m one step closer,” says Schauffele as he sets his sights on the Grand Slam.
Schauffele is not finished yet. Initially fixated on the first target, he now aims for a minimum of four targets.
Xander Schauffele was asked if he had considered achieving the career Grand Slam, which has only been accomplished by five individuals in history: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods. He responded with confidence that it is an achievement he has always desired.
Although I have a long journey ahead, each step brings me closer to my goal. However, if you can’t envision yourself accomplishing it, you’ll never achieve it.
He definitely has the skills to accomplish it.
Schauffele’s triumph at Royal Troon showcased his exceptional consistency despite challenging golf courses and weather conditions that even tested the skills of top ranked players globally.
Competing in any weather condition is a distinguishing characteristic of his career. He isn’t just a golfer who excels on sunny days and comfortable courses, but also capable of competing under any circumstance imaginable (quite literally).
Providing evidence, it can be observed that Schauffele has only missed three cuts out of 30 major appearances starting from his tied-fifth debut at the US Open in 2017. The year 2022 was an exception as he failed to secure a top-10 position in any of golf’s four main tournaments; however, he still managed to place well with ties for the13th,14th and15th positions which came respectively during PGA Championship, US Open and The Open held that year.
This individual has achieved the feat of shooting a record-equalling low round of 62 in men’s major championships not once, but twice. The first was at the US Open in 2023 and they repeated this accomplishment on their way to victory at Valhalla earlier this year.
According to Andrew Coltart of Sky Sports, Valhalla altered his level of confidence. Despite repeatedly coming close, observers questioned if he possessed the ability to ascend further.
Continuing to face challenging situations at the PGA Championship and replicating a 62 score in a major championship causes one’s mindset to shift towards confidence, realizing their own competence.
Schauffele’s mentality is as strong as his game, without any apparent weaknesses.
“In America, the golf courses are mostly one-dimensional and players don’t have to face challenging conditions such as tough bounces or being on the wrong side of the draw.”
“He has arrived here and tackled every obstacle that the Royal Troon presented him with. His ability coupled with his conviction has made him almost invincible.”
The crucial factor is Schauffele’s combination of long-standing ability and newfound belief after achieving a major win at Valhalla. Could he be the one to succeed Tiger as the dominant player in golf?
Despite the considerable presence of Scheffler, who currently holds the top spot in golf and dominates the game, His Royal Troon Triumph has propelled him to secure second place worldwide.
Schauffele is ready to face the challenge, as he expressed after winning his second major. “The flame within me still blazes,” he stated with enthusiasm. “In fact, it may burn even brighter than before.”
