Tiger Woods once explained why he gave up baseball and track to play golf.

Tiger Woods missed the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon. He shot 79 and 77 and missed eight shots. Although he remains one of the greatest golfers of his time, golf wasn’t his first favorite sport.

Tiger Woods tried his hand at several sports when he was younger. In a November 2016 interview with Charlie Rose, Woods was asked why he chose golf. He said:

“I’ve played it almost my whole life. I played baseball. I was a wedding. I ran along the cross -country on the way.

\ “I liked participating in these sports, but I didn’t like it. I kept coming back to golf. I kept finding myself running miles on the treadmill, especially on the trails, and putting all those miles in preparation for golf.” (17:27-17:50)

Woods turned pro in 1996. Since then, he has won 15 major titles and 82 PGA Tour titles. He is tied for the most PGA Tour victories with Sam Snead and is three behind Jack Nicklaus in majors. In an interview with Rose, he also said:

“And when I hit the ball on the mound, I thought, ‘OK, this is like No. 1, OK.'”

“To hit that fastball outside, you have to hit it to the right, far side. My mind kept coming back to golf. And so whatever I was doing it kept coming back to golf.\” (17:50-18:07)

Tiger Woods won’t play golf until December, more than four months away.

He’s scheduled to play in the 2024 Hero World Challenge at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas from December 5-8. Woods will compete in the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida, from Dec. 19 to 22.

Woods hasn’t been in good form lately. Of his five tournaments, he has qualified only for the 2024 Masters. His highest score came at the legendary Augusta National golf club. He missed Friday’s games against Valhalla, No. 2 Pinehurst and Royal Troon.
