“I AM GENUINELY DISGUSTED”: THE WORLD REACTS TO ‘SATANIC’ OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY
“I’m really excited”: World reacts to “Demonic” Olympic Opening Ceremony
The stage was set for a definitive Olympic opening ceremony: for the first time in Paris, the ceremony was held outside the stadium, with Olympians parading along the Seine River in an open-to-the-public setting. Unfortunately, many felt the ceremony was not as successful as it had been advertised. From confusion over an unidentified masked torchbearer to religious riots, the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympics has been described on social media as “the saddest, most pathetic, embarrassing and most shameful event in Olympic history.” So let’s see how this unfolded and how the world responded.
The first of a series of surprises was Lady Gaga taking center stage, engulfed in pink feathers. She performed Gigi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc En Plumes” along the Seine, recreating Jeanmaire’s rendition of the song on The Ed Sullivan Show. She went downstairs and began to play the piano.
“Even though I am not a French artist, I have always felt a special connection to the French people and French music. All I wanted was to create a show that would warm the French heart, celebrate French art and music, and, on such an important occasion, remind everyone of Paris, one of the most magical cities on earth,” Gaga wrote in an Instagram post. I’m incredibly grateful to have been invited to open the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this year. I’m also honored that the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games asked me to sing such a special French song, a song that celebrates the French people and their traditions.
This performance has been described as “iconic” by many X users. The powerful, feather-filled spectacle was pre-recorded due to concerns for the performers’ safety in bad weather. “We felt that even a few drops of rain would be too dangerous for the artists. (Gaga) absolutely wanted to do it, so we chose to pre-record it rather than cancel,” said Maud Le Pradeck, choreographer for the Olympic and Paralympic Opening Ceremony. While most fans were excited about Gaga’s surprise appearance, some were disappointed with the performance, taking to social media to call the pre-tape a “total disappointment.”
I’m old enough to remember Oasis, Spice Girls, George Michael and Pet Shop Boys performing live at the 2012 London Olympics…
Heavy metal at the Olympics? Top French metal band Gojira made history by becoming the first metal band to perform at the Olympic Games opening ceremony. Shortly after the dedication of Les Miserables, the camera focused on the façade of the castle, where a headless Marie Antoinette sang to the crowd. Changing gears, Godzilla drummer Mario Duplantier appeared in one of the glass areas as the camera pulled back to show the rest of the group emerging from different parts of the castle. Flames erupted all around the orchestra, sending smoke plumes into the air.
Most attendees were delighted with the unexpected performance, calling it “the best thing the French have ever done.”
