O’Callaghan and Titmuss finished 1-2. O’Callaghan’s win also means that the 200 freestyle continues its stat that the no woman has ever won two titles in a row. In typical O’Callaghan fashion, she made a strong comeback at the end and was almost a second faster than Titmus in Tokyo in the last 50 miles. In fact, O’Callaghan was almost the same speed in the first 50 miles as she was in the last 50 miles, even taking into account the start. O’Callaghan was third in the 150, but her time of 27.98 was the fastest of the group by 0.23 seconds as Titmus closed out her heat tonight in 29.08. O’Callaghan’s best time was 1:52.48 at the Australian trials, when she returned home in 28.37. O’Callaghan’s win also marked her first individual Olympic gold medal. She had already won gold this week, helping Australia win gold in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. He also won two gold medals at the Tokyo Relays.
