Charlie Woods bounces back from U.S. Junior Amateur nightmare to win first major
Charlie Woods endured a tough week at the U.S. Junior Amateur, but just days later he returned in style to win the South Florida Junior Tour
Earlier this week, Charlie Woods won his first major after the son of the great Tiger Woods won the South Florida Junior Cup.
Woods Jr. shot 73, 68, 73 to become the only player to break par throughout the tournament on the East Course at Ballen Isles Country Club. That was enough to crown him the tournament winner, a title that became one of eight major events on the South Florida Junior Tour schedule.
“I wanted this so badly,” the youngster said. “I felt focused and I knew what I had to do to get there. I wanted to prove that I could do more.”
“I think it’s the result of a lot of hard work this summer. I wanted to redeem myself, and I feel great about how I played.” His victory came just a week after he endured a tough time at the US Junior Amateur, as he missed the cut with his dad watching on.
Tiger himself had been in action a week prior, making just his fifth start of the season at The Open Championship. He fell the same fate as his son. Because Woods struggled in a difficult situation in the Royaltoon, and missed the third cup at four events.
Woods plays a part -time calendar on the PGA tour, but continues to fight a certain number of fitness issues behind the injury caused by a car accident in February 2021. Outside of the four majors, Woods has played just one regular tour event this year, the Genesis Invitational in February.
