According to The Undefeated, Ronald and Nellie tied the knot in January of 1977 during his service with the Air Force. Their love story began while he was stationed in San Antonio, Texas where she was pursuing nursing school. At that point, Ronald had already been looking after his daughter Shannon who happened to be Simone’s birth mother as a single parent. Later on post-marriage bond, they welcomed two sons whom they named Adam and Ronnie Jr., completing their family unit together.

Shannon had a total of four kids, Simone being one among them. Owing to her addiction issues, the siblings were taken in by foster care when the athlete was about three years old. Without any hesitation, they registered her for classes which soon became dear to young Simone’s heart – generating an instant passion within herself that burn till date.

“In 2016, Nellie recounted that it became history from then on. She recalled how the girl never skipped a practice; even when unwell, she would insist on going instead of staying at home.”

Throughout her career, they have consistently offered their unwavering support during both times of triumph and adversity. In 2020, Simone made the difficult decision to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics in order to prioritize her mental health after realizing that it was not safe for her to perform aerial feats with such precision and grace. She confided in Brené Brown that one factor contributing heavily towards increased stress was being unable to transfer these skills due COVID-19 preventative measures.

Simone expressed, “We traveled to Tokyo without any spectators permitted. We were confined to our rooms and only granted permission to exit for meals throughout the day. Expectations had been set in regards to our performance, but we lacked unity within the team. Additionally, my parents weren’t able accompany me which was a first as they have never missed one of my competitions before.”

Upon her return from Tokyo, she promptly visited her parents.
