Defending champion Xander Schauffele of the United States remained at the top of the Olympic men’s golf rankings at 14 under after Saturday’s penultimate round, sharing first place with Spaniard Jon Rahm. Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood, who shared the overnight lead with Schauffele and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, remains in medal contention in third place, one point behind the leader, heading into Sunday’s final round at Le Golf National near the French capital.
The 60-player field in the Olympic golf competition was reduced by one on Sunday after Britain’s Matt Fitzpatrick retired with an injury. Rahm improved on his fourth-place finish overnight with his second straight 5-under-par 66.
The 2023 Masters champion, who is part of the Saudi-backed LIV Tour, celebrated a strong showing at the British Open followed by a victory at the UK LIV in July. “I’m very, very happy to be playing the way I did last month … and to have the opportunity I have this week,” he told reporters after the round.
