Jon Rahm was crushed after blowing his lead at the Olympics

Scottie Scheffler clinched gold in the men’s individual golf at the Paris Olympics, but Jon Rahm was left feeling “pain” after claiming he’d let his country down.

Rahm was leading in the fourth and final round in Paris, and it seemed only a matter of time before he and Spain would win a gold medal. However, a disastrous back nine saw him blow the lead and drop to fifth, meaning he left empty handed against all the odds.

The Spaniard left the 10th green with a four-stroke lead, and was six strokes ahead of Scheffler who ended up winning the gold medal. Rahm was distraught when speaking to reporters, and said: “I don’t remember the last time I played a tournament and I felt this.

“I not only feel like I let myself down but to just not get it done for the whole country of Spain, it’s a lot more painful than I would like it to be.” Through the final eight holes Rahm suffered four bogeys and one double-bogey, undoing all his hard work in the previous three-and-a-half rounds.
After being asked how he’s feeling, Rahm continued as he added: “I’ve gotten the question, where this tournament would rank in my opinion or what I would think it would feel like to win, and I think by losing today, I’m getting a much deeper appreciation of what this tournament means to me than if I had won any medal, right.

“I’m getting a taste of how much it really mattered. I’ve been very honoured to represent Spain in many, many different events, and to not get this one done stings quite a bit.”

Ahead of the event some fans questioned what Rahm’s motivation would be, seeing as no financial reward is offered for winning in the Olympics. Rahm has always claimed he plays golf for pride, but when leaving the PGA Tour to sign for LIV Golf in December 2023 it confused some supporters.
