Rory McIlroy did not hold back as he delivered an X-rated assessment of golf after failing to win a medal at the Olympics. On Sunday afternoon, the golf event came to a close with Team USA’s Scottie Scheffler taking the gold with Team GB star Tommy Fleetwood winning the silver. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama took the bronze medal.McIlroy, who suffered a heartbreaking loss at the US Open last month, finished in fifth place.Speaking after the event, McIlroy was far from happy about the current state of the sport. As reported by talkSPORT, he said: “[The week was] amazing. We were talking about it out there and Nico [Hojgaard] reckons it’s the best tournament he’s ever been involved in.“I still think the Ryder Cup is the best tournament that we have in our game, pure competition, and I think this has the potential to be right up there with it.”He continued: “I think with how much of a ****show the game of golf is right now and you think about the tournaments that might be the purest form of competition in our sport, we don’t play for money in it.“So it speaks volumes for what’s important in sports and I think every single player this week has had an amazing experience.”Silver medalist Fleetwood, 33, said: “Part of me that is disappointed, of course, but at the same time I never dreamt I’d be an Olympic medallist.“I’m still unbelievably proud and happy of the way the week went. I’m proud of the way I played today.”He added: “As a young boy taking up the game of golf, none of us had a chance to win Olympic gold so it was never on our agenda.Olympic move so dangerous it was banned“That quickly changes when you’re part of the Olympics and it feels unbelievably special. I know I didn’t win gold but standing on that podium with a medal was one of the most amazing moments I’ve had as a golfer.”
