The proposed trade would send Lars Eller to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to land a group of forwards this offseason, but in one trade, Toronto acquired two forwards from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The website PuckPedia has a new tool called “PuckGM” that allows users to create their own trades, and one user proposed a deal in which the Maple Leafs would acquire two forwards and a draft pick from the Penguins.
In the proposed deal, Toronto and Pittsburgh would each sign two forwards, but the Maple Leafs would receive the draft pick. The Penguins are acquiring RFA Nick Robertson, who has informed the Maple Leafs he has no plans to re-sign with the team. Robertson recorded 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points in 56 games last season with Toronto. Holmberg, meanwhile, recorded seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 54 games with the Maple Leafs last season. Robertson and Holmberg project to be top-six forwards for the Penguins. As for the Maple Leafs’ return, Toronto would acquire Eller, who won a Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals in 2018. The centre has one year remaining on his two-year, $4.9 million contract. He predicted that he would be third in Maple Leaefs at the center, and recorded 15 goals and 16 assists with 31 points last season in 82 games.
Matt Niet, on the other hand, is a winger or Toronto scratch on the fourth line, but adds a veteran presence to the range. Nieto has played 673 NHL games and had 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points in 22 games last season.
Robertson requests trade from Maple Leafs
The main player in the proposed deal is Robertson, who is just 22 years old and was drafted 53rd overall by the Maple Leafs.
While Robertson has proven to be a solid NHL player, he hasn’t had the opportunity to become a regular player. He has requested a trade as he has no intention of re-signing with the Maple Leafs. Per a source, RFA Nick Robertson has told the team he doesn’t plan to re-sign with the #Leafs this summer and wants to be traded.
Despite Robertson asking for a trade, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said the team still believes the forward can play a key role in Toronto. “I certainly knew there were some frustrations with Nick, but we view Nick as a great player,” Treliving told the media on July 1. “There’s a great opportunity here for Nick.” We need him to be a good player for us. I don’t want to get involved in speculation or public discussions. We are just going to leave him on this and continue to move forward. »»
Robertson rolled skates in 87 NHL games, recording 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points.
Penguins GM compiled Robertson & Holmberg
Kyle Dubas is the current managing director of the Penguins, and earlier he was a great master of Maple Leafs. Dubas was the Maple Leafs’ GM from 2018-23, so he was part of the front office that drafted Holmberg in 2018 and Robertson in 2020.
Given Dubas’ familiarity with Holmberg and Robertson, he would bring them back into his system while simultaneously getting younger, which was Dubas’ goal. “This is a guarantee of our decisions and how competitive now can be given, but not only imposes quick decisions, but also penguins are ordinary long -term long -term long -term long -term. It was a complete goal. ” The Penguins failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2023-24 NHL season with a 38-32-12 record.
