Amid his recent struggles, Phil Mickelson said he’s ready to retire from LIV Golf if he doesn’t start playing at the level he’s accustomed to during his storied career.
The 54-year-old High Flyers captain has just one top-20 finish in 2024 and failed to qualify for two of the four majors this year. Per ESPN, Mickelson said during a call previewing LIV\’s Sept. 13-15 Individual Championship at Bolingbrook Golf Club that his lackluster play has him considering stepping away for a bit. “I see glimpses of me that expect I can compete at this level, and my teammates see glimpses of me, but I’m also realistic with myself and if I can’t do it, I’ll step aside and let someone else come and take the high flyers to the next level,” he said by phone. Mickelson is one of the first and most prominent golfers to join LIV Golf in Saudi Arabia in 2022, where he reportedly received a $200 million contract. A large six -stroke champion, which has a company’s joint share, added that if it is useful for the team, it is practical to leave Hyflyers.
\ “I will be all major in the regular round next year, and will be three out of four adults in the next six years. “I want to compete and give myself a chance to win and then build on that and create a sustainable culture that people want to be a part of,” he said. “How do I do that? Whether that’s internally as a player and so forth or purely externally, I’m also going to be realistic about where I see myself in the future, probably the rest of my life and beyond that throughout my playing career.”
