Amid his recent struggles, Phil Mickelson has made it clear that he plans to stop competing with LIV Golf if he doesn’t start playing at the level he’s accustomed to during his legendary career.
The 54-year-old High Flyers team captain has only one top-20 finish on the breakaway circuit in 2024 and has missed the cut in two of the four majors this year. According to ESPN, Mickelson said during a preview call for the LIV Individual Championship, which will be held Sept. 13-15 at Bolingbrook Golf Club, that his mediocre play has him considering taking some time away. “I’ve seen glimpses of me being at a level where I’m expected to compete at this level and my teammates have seen glimpses of me being at a level where they expect me to compete at this level, but I’m also realistic with myself and if I can’t get there, I’m going to step aside and have someone come and take me to a new high-flyer level,” he said by phone.
Mickelson was one of the first and most prominent golfers to sign a $200 million contract with Saudi-backed LIV Golf for 2022. The six-time major champion, who also owns a stake in the company, added that he’s open to taking a short break from the High Flyers if it benefits the team.
“I intend to play every major on the regular tour next year and then three of the four majors over the next six or seven years. I want to compete and give myself the opportunity to win. I also want to create this and create a stable culture. \ “Whether it’s inside as a player or whether it’s strictly from the outside, how to do it, I confused with GIF, probably left the rest of my life. In my career, I will be realistic.
