Masters 2024: Stable Start Tiger Woods leaves room for optimism
Florida’s Jupiter suffered soft scarecrow in the two of the two of the two of the last three holes, including the last three shouts. Woods hit his first shot right over the sprinklers to start his second round on the par-4 10th hole. It is not a bromate reading, but a literal explanation. His tea stopped at the back of the Sprinkler Chuo Line and was forced to promote him. His approach to the 10th green stopped 15 feet short of the pin and he two-putted for par. The same thing happened on the second hole, the long par-4 11th, when his striped driver landed on the green and he two-putted for par. It was an encouraging start for Woods, who had a tough first day in his USGA debut on Monday morning and who has followed in his father’s footsteps with many achievements, including three straight junior titles. A 12-over 82 on the easy North Course meant he was simply playing for the pride and experience on a hot day in suburban Detroit, but Charlie was followed by another big crowd, this one for the golfing crowd and the Tiger Watch Golf crowd, to keep their heads in the game. That seemed to be the case until a windstorm brought heavy rain and delayed play by an hour and 45 minutes, leading to the cancellation at 3:05 p.m. ET. Woods seemed to lose his charisma during that period as he played the final five holes of his opening nine-over eight-over par. The 18th hole was particularly tricky, as he missed the green with two shots, then missed the green with two shots from downhill and watched the ball come back in. He finally got it on his third try, two-putting from 20 feet. But the youngster played well after that, pinning his tee shot to five feet on the par-3 third hole for his only birdie of the day. He missed only one fairway and two greens on the way back, but not much else of note. After signing his card, he got into a golf cart with his father, his caddy and security personnel. For the second time in as many days, he chose not to speak to the media. He didn’t seem disappointed and he didn’t look happy when the cart was heading for the parking lot. He looked like a golfer who learned something. Overall, it’s a good option.
