Today in Sports History: Tiger Woods Becomes Youngest Player to Win 50 on PGA Tour

Today’s Highlight in Sports History:

In 2006, Tiger Woods (age 30) becomes the youngest player to win 50 on the PGA Tour with a 3-shot victory over Jim Furyk at the Buick Open.

On this date:

1958 — Glen Davis of Columbus, Ohio, sets a world record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.2 in Budapest, Hungary.

1966 — Muhammad Ali knocks out Brian London in the third round to retain his world heavyweight title.

1972 — South African Gary Player wins his second PGA golf championship with a two-stroke victory over Jim Jamieson and Tommy Aaron. 1978 – John Mahaffey beats Tom Watson and Jerry Pate on the second hole of a playoff to win the PGA Championship.

1984 – American athlete Carl Lewis wins the long jump (8.54 meters) to win his second of four gold medals at the Los Angeles Olympics. 1991 – Debbie Doom of the United States pitched a perfect game in women’s softball for the second consecutive year at the Pan American Games. Doom pitched a perfect game in the opening game against Netherlands Antilles and repeated the performance against Nicaragua in an 8-0 victory. 1992-Carl Lewis leads the continuation of the American length at the Olympic Games with a brand of 28 feet, 5 1-2 inches on the first attempt. Mike Powell takes money and Joe Green – Bronze. Kevin Young broke one of the oldest track and field records with a time of 46.78 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles. Bruce Baumgartner won the gold medal in freestyle wrestling at 129 kg, becoming the first American wrestler to win medals in three consecutive Olympic Games.

1994 — Jeff Gordon wins the Brickyard 400, the first stock car race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

1995 — Canada’s Donovan Bailey wins the 100 meters at World Track and Field Championships in Goteborg, Sweden, marking the first time since 1976 an American fails to win a medal in the event at a major meet. 1999 — Tony Gwynn singled in his first at-bat and went 4-for-5 as the San Diego Padres beat the Montreal Expos 12-10, becoming the 22nd major league player to reach 3,000 hits.

2001 – At the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada, two-time champion Marion Jones was disqualified and her 42-game winning streak in the 100-meter final was ended by Ukraine’s Zhanna Pintusevic-Brock. 2006 – Floyd Landis tests positive for over the legal limit for testosterone in his second doping test, leading to him being fired from his team and no longer counting as a Tour de France champion.

2006 – Shelley Steinhauer wins the Women’s British Open for the third time, her first since the tournament became a major. 2008 — Former University of Toledo basketball player Sammy Villegas is charged with snatching. Villegas is accused of stealing points during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. 2008 – Kim Terrell Carney defeats Tricia Reed 216-189 in the U.S. Women’s Open Bowling Championship, becoming the first two black bowlers to win a professional championship match. Terrell Carney wins her second U.S. Women’s Open and third career major title. 2010-Tyson Gay is angry with today’s world and the Olympic champion Usan Bolt in a race between the fastest runners in history. Gay hits Jamaica at 9.84 seconds at the same stadium where Bolt finally lost the race. Bolt came in second with 9.97 points.

2015 – Ryan Lochte becomes the first athlete to win four consecutive 200m medley titles at the World Aquatics Championships. Lofuta enters a special feature and applies to the first house at 1:55.81 in Russian Kazan.

2017 -i.K.
