Bryson DeChambeau confronts CBS reporters at golf tournament, threatening violence against them

The journalists claim they said nothing provocative in response to a question about football.

Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice confronted two men on Thursday who were walking across the field with the greatest receiver in NFL history, eventually threatening them with violence. It would be natural to assume that Rice was offended by something provocative and responded accordingly. However, based on video of the incident, it appears that this was not the case.

Rice can be seen telling one of the reporters, “I’m going to f**k you up.” As security separated Rice from the two men, he walked away, saying, “If you want it, come get it.” Video of the confrontation was obtained by TMZ Sports, which posted the clip to social media. After the incident, a member of the audience asked one of the reporters (working for Starcade Media, according to TMZ) what happened. He said, “The craziest thing that’s ever happened in my life,” and then said he asked Rice if the Kansas City Chiefs’ receiving corps was good enough to win another Super Bowl. The Chiefs rank seventh in the NFL with 4,383 receiving yards, but that number includes yards gained by tight ends and running backs as well as wide receivers. Kansas City did not have a receiver with 1,000 yards. Ruthie Rice led the team’s receivers with 79 catches for 938 yards. (Travis Kelce was the Chiefs’ leading pass-catching player with 93 catches for 984 yards.)

Kansas City added two notable receivers during the offseason, signing free agent Marquise Brown and selecting Texas speedster Xavier Worthy in the first round of the draft. The team re-signed Mecole Hardman but lost Marquez Valdes-Scantling to free agency.

TMZ caught up with Rice after the incident and asked him about it, to which he responded that he saw the question as an attempt to confront his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, who the Chiefs beat in last season’s Super Bowl. Rice said the men had “smiles” on their faces, indicating they were trying to get a reaction from the man.

It’s difficult to hear everything that was said in the video, but Rice’s account of the confrontation doesn’t dispute what reporters have said. During a conversation with the public, one reporter suggested that Rice may have been drunk. This cannot be verified. So this is a “he said, he said” scenario, with each side having their own version of events.

In a statement posted to social media, Starrcade Media insisted it had no intention of disrespecting or provoking Rice. As I was recognized, there was no “naya -ni laughing”.

Probably, the feeling of rice for the chief receiver will be revisited in another setting later.
