Brandel Chamblee, Paige Mackenzie ’embarrassed’ by Matt Kuchar’s devastating shot at Wyndham Championship: ‘It was completely disrespectful’
Golf analysts Brandel Chamblee and Paige Mackenzie were baffled by Matt Kuchar’s decision to play the final hole of the fourth round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship on Monday, Aug. 12. The PGA Tour event was delayed by weather but was on track to finish safely Sunday. However, play was halted due to darkness and only three players were able to complete the game.
By that time, Kuchar, Max Glaserman and Chad Ramey had played the final hole but had to finish their round. Rami and Grajizaman decided to continue the game, but decided to end on Monday after 18th place.
Kucha had accelerated the shots destroyed by the 18th, and it was certain that groups, including Aaron rice, are still playing. Fortunately, his ball went well left of the 18th fairway. Nevertheless, he decided to continue playing the next day. Explaining his reasoning for not playing the 18th hole on Sunday, Kuchar said (via NBC Sports):
“I was trying to set an example for Max,” Kuchar told Lewis. “We were pretty far from the point where we should have stopped playing. You saw what Max did with well number 16. They had to blow the well up. I felt bad and that poor kid should have won that tournament. If I don’t play, it might show Max he has a great chance.”
But golf analyst Brandel Chamblee wasn’t satisfied with Kuchar’s reasoning, saying (via NBC Sports):
“Why would he take his first shot at 18? If he had hit a good shot, it would have been on target and could have disrupted Aaron Lai and the group in front of him. … If he wanted to leave, he could have done so a long time ago.
Paige McKenzie also spoke about Kuchar’s decision to sit out Monday’s action, saying (via Golfweek):
“Why would he tee off on 18 if the fairway wasn’t clear? To me this was a clear mistake, it was just plain disrespectful. »
It’s worth noting that even if Kuchar were to bet on the 18th hole on Monday, he still wouldn’t win the tournament. And he’s unlikely to finish inside the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings. He is projected to rank 103rd in the FedExCup rankings and will miss the playoffs.
A look back at Matt Kuchar’s performance in the final round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship. After teeing off in the final round of the 2024 Wyndham Championship, Matt Kuchar made par on his first four holes and birdied the fifth hole. Despite a strong start, he unfortunately finished with a double bogey on the seventh. On the back nine, Kuchar started with Bogie on the 10th and continued with another Bogie on the 14th. He collected two pigeons on his new back and moved into first through twelfth place. Nevertheless, he still has to finish the game in the last room. If he makes normal 18, he can maintain his position in the ranking. On the other hand, if you get a bogey or worse on the 18th hole, your ranking will drop.
