Scottie Scheffler breaks down in tears during the national anthem after winning Olympic gold

When golf returned to the Olympics in 2016, it was derided as having about the same significance as your average PGA Tour event.

A number of top players skipped the Rio Games, citing its proximity to a major tournament and concerns about the Zika virus. Five years later, the Tokyo Games went ahead without much fuss.

But any questions about what gold now means to top golfers were answered, and even more so when tears flowed from Scottie Scheffler’s eyes as the Stars and Stripes played on the podium at Golf National on Sunday. The 28-year-old then shared a kiss with his wife Meredith, who was holding their 3-month-old son Bennett. Scheffler’s final-round 62, along with a spectacular fall by Spaniard Jon Rahm, helped an American win the first gold medal in Paris and put an exclamation point on a season that also included a Masters victory.

The world-ranked golfer started Sunday four strokes behind the leader and opened the day with three consecutive birdies.
