Masters champion Jon Rahm’s defection to Saudi Arabia-sponsored LIV Golf for what is expected to be more than the total prize money of the PGA Tour was a blow that deepened the rift in the golf world as the two countries were negotiating a trade agreement.

He will remain eligible to play in major tournaments for the next five years, the Masters in perpetuity and the U.S. Open until 2031. It has not yet been determined how the decision will affect his Ryder Cup eligibility.
“It’s hard to sit here and criticise John because he’s a great player,” Rory McIlroy told Sky Sports. “John will come to Bethpage (for the Ryder Cup) in 2025. This decision means the European Tour will have to rewrite the rules. There’s no doubt about that.”
The addition of Lama gives LIV Golf seven of the last 14 major tournament winners.
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan was scheduled to meet with PIF Chairman Yasser Al Rumayyan this week. The meeting was delayed until next week, but it was not clear if it was still on or how Rahm’s announcement affects negotiations.
Since the stunning commercial partnership was proposed on June 6, the tour has also entertained offers from private equity groups. These include Fenway Sports Group and Acorn Growth, which includes former AT&T Chairman Randall Stevenson, who resigned from the PGA Tour board in protest of the Saudi deal. The deal initially included provisions aimed at stopping player poaching, but it was scrapped when the Justice Department raised antitrust concerns.
Signing with LIV goes against everything Rahm has said about the league. He has voiced his support for the PGA Tour starting in February 2022, saying as recently as August on a Spanish-language podcast: “I never liked that format,” he said, calling the 54 holes with no cuts and a shotgun start “not tournament golf.” “I want to play against the best in the world in a format that’s been around for hundreds of years,” he said at the U.S. Open last year. “That’s what I want to see.”
In an interview with Fox, he struck a different note, saying that while money is a factor, there are other elements “that make it so exciting.” “When you get past the love of the game, the desire to take the game to a global market, be a part of a team, be a captain and hopefully be a leader for your teammates, it becomes something very special,” Rahm said.
