Tiger Woods’ statement leaves golf fans reeling after ‘sad’ turn of events in his return

The 48-year-old played six holes in the second round of the Genesis Invitational before announcing his retirement.

Fans are fearing the worst for Tiger Woods after the American legend withdrew from the Genesis Invitational after just six holes on Friday due to illness. Woods, playing in his first PGA Tour event of the year and his first official tournament since the Masters last April, announced his retirement after just 24 holes.

After hitting his tee shot on the seventh hole on Friday, the 48-year-old asked for his cart to be removed and was escorted off the course by a rules official. Mark Dasvavec, an official of the PGA tour, stated that Woods was sick on a television program, and his departure was not related to his ankle or back.

Rob McNamara, a long -standing partner and vice president of the TGR venture, said Woods had a symptom of influenza on Thursday evening. “He had a slight fever and felt better while warming up, but when he came out and started walking and playing he started to feel dizzy,” McNamara told PGA Tour officials.

“Ultimately the doctors said he may have some kind of flu and he was dehydrated.” They put him on an IV and he’s feeling a lot better and will be out here soon.”

Woods said Thursday he had back spasms after bogeying the final hole of the first round. He was 1-over-par in the second round but finished just behind the cut. Earlier Friday, Duszbabek said the problem isn’t with his hip. “That’s not what he’s telling us right now,” Duszbabek said. “It’s a disease, he doesn’t feel well. I’m sure that’s part and parcel to the reason, but he’s not feeling well. He’s feeling ill right now.”

But after playing his first match in more than 10 months on Thursday, the 48-year-old admitted he was nervous about whether his plans would come to fruition. “I hope so and I hope I can play as well as I can,” Woods said. “In terms of the physical ups and downs, it’s part of my body and part of who I am, and it’s OK, I accept it and I accept the challenges.
