Tiger Woods Still Overly Dominates World Ranking Despite Absence Amid Scottie Scheffler’s Elite League Entry
Scottie Scheffler’s streak began in late 2022, after winning the Waste Management Phoenix Open two years ago. He has also won six events in the 2024 season which has further solidified his win, and not to forget his gold medal at the Paris Olympics. However, despite entering into the elite club with Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, and others, he has not yet been able to beat Tiger Woods’s record!
Scottie Scheffler still has spent the lowest time on the top. Rory McIlroy has had his 122 weeks, and is currently at No. 3, Dustin Johnson, before moving to LIV Golf spent 135 weeks on the top, and Greg Norman during his prime bagged the position for a whopping 331 weeks. Tiger Woods still tops with a 683-week record on the top of the OWGR list. He was ranked first for the first time in June 1997.
Woods had a dominating run throughout the first decade of the 21st century and was ranked top from August 1999 to September 2004. This was the highest number of 264 consecutive weeks a golfer had spent on the top. He beat his record by claiming the position again from June 2005 to October 2010 (281 weeks). This remains the highest. Tiger Woods’ record is so high that it is after summing all the total weeks that the remaining four players have bagged the top position, that they will reach his record!
There is of course a reason as to why Tiger Woods is still regarded as the best golfer in history even at the age of 48. However, this year, Scottie Scheffler matched the footsteps of Mr. T and shared the unique winning record that the 48 YO once held.
Scottie Scheffler left no stone unturned to win the trophy at the Augusta National in his fifth appearance. He bagged a 68 in the final round, with a 4-stroke victory against Ludvig Aberg, who finished with 7-under. This win made him join hands with Tiger Woods to have won both the Masters and the Players Championship in one season.
He won the Players Championship back in March defeating Brian Harman, Xander Schauffele, and Wyndham Clark, who were all tied for the second position. Scheffler finished with a 20-under score. Tiger Woods had achieved this feat of victory back in 2001, almost two decades ago! Do you think Scottie Scheffler will be able to follow in his footsteps on other grounds as well?
