1921 – Molla Bjurstedt Mallory defeats Mary Brown 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to win the U.S. women’s national tennis title at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia.
1931 – Helen Wills Moody defeats Eileen Bennett Whitingstall 6-4, 6-1 to win the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association women’s title. 1944 – Robert Hamilton beats Byron Nelson in the final round to win the PGA Championship by one point.
1960 – Dutchman Heiros II, ridden by Willem Gersen, wins the second International Trotting Race at Roosevelt Raceway before a record crowd of 54,861. 1990 – George Steinbrenner resigns as owner of the New York Yankees.
1995 – Monica Seles completes a remarkable first week in competitive tennis by defeating Amanda Coetzer 6-0, 6-1 to win the Canadian Open title. His 74 matches set the tournament record for fewest matches played by a champion.
1999 – The 7th World Championships in Athletics open in Seville, Spain. 2000 — Tiger Woods defeats Bob May in a playoff to win the PGA Championship, becoming the first player to win three major championships in the same year since Ben Hogan in 1953. He also becomes the first player to repeat as PGA champion since Denny Shute in 1937. 2003 — The United States wins the women’s team gold medal at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, becoming the first American woman or man to win a gold medal at the biggest international competition outside the Olympics. 2004 — Michael Phelps wins the 100-meter butterfly, tying Mark Spitz’s record of four individual Olympic gold medals in swimming. He beat teammate Ian Crocker to win his fifth gold medal. Shortly after winning his seventh Olympic medal, Phelps cedes his spot in the mixed relay to Crocker.
2006 — Tiger Woods wins the PGA Championship by five strokes over Shawn Michael, claiming his 12th career Grand Slam title. He becomes the first player to win two PGA Championships on the same course at Medinah in 1999.
