Simone Biles says husband Jonathan Owens’ viral interview “broke me”
Biles said of the comments about her marriage, “I thought it was funny at first, then it hurt.”
Simone Biles opened up about her much-talked-about 2023 interview with husband Jonathan Owens, in which the NFL player called their relationship a “trap,” sparking backlash from fans.
Owens, 28, first made the comments during a December episode of the podcast “The Pivot.” “I always say men are the problem,” he said, adding that he “struggled” with his natural sense of “commitment anxiety” before he and Biles, 27, officially started dating.
The comment sparked a backlash on social media from fans who criticized Owens and Biles’ relationship, with some even calling for the gymnast to end her marriage to the NFL player. Biles revealed that the conversation about her relationship left her in tears during an April 16 appearance on the podcast “Call Her Daddy.” “First of all, this interview had nothing to do with me,” Biles said of her husband’s conversation with Pivot. She added: “That was everything to him. So I think they were upset that he didn’t include me in the interview, but he had his time and I let him have it.”

The Olympian also pointed out that her husband’s comments may have been misinterpreted. \ “I have never said I am not catching,” Birz explained. \ “He said he was something. I’ve never met anyone like that. A lot of people who have met him say, “Oh my goodness.” I want a guy like Jonathan.
Biles said she initially found the conversation funny.
I thought it was funny when people said, ‘Divorce him, divorce him.’ “It’s all this crazy stuff,” she said, adding, “And he doesn’t want to say divorce. So at first I thought it was funny, but then it hurt.”
Eventually, Biles said she couldn’t stand the negative comments any more, revealing, “I just broke down crying one night and I was like, ‘Why would people say this about my husband?'”
Biles explained that her husband is “the sweetest guy who would do anything for anyone” and that when the interview went viral, the comments “really hurt me.” “It really hurts me to hear that said about my husband. To me, you can talk about me all you want but don’t come for my family,” she said. Biles also said during the podcast that her husband is “the sweetest” person and “compliments the ground I walk on.” “The truth is, I’ve never met anyone like him.” “He still opens the door for me,” she added.
Owens and Biles were married on April 22, 2023, at the Harris County Courthouse in Houston. A few weeks later, the couple had a second wedding in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, surrounded by family and friends.
Less than a month after the wedding, Owens signed with the Green Bay Packers, forcing the couple to adapt to long-distance marriage. During the NFL offseason, Owens left the Packers as a free agent and signed a two-year, $4.75 million contract with the Chicago Bears.
Biles, meanwhile, is preparing for a possible return to the Summer Olympics, which will be held in Paris starting in July. The four-time Olympic gold medalist revealed last year that \”so far, it’s heading in the right direction\” as she continued to \”work on myself.\”
