The US Open defeat left Charlie Woods in distress, and despite Tiger Woods’ efforts to console him, the boy has abstained from eating for a couple of days.
Despite not meeting the necessary requirements for the 2024 U.S. Open, Tiger Woods is anticipated to be presented with a unique exemption from the USGA due to his status as a 15-time major champion.
Meanwhile, his fifteen-year-old son also attempted to secure a spot at Pinehurst in June.
On Thursday, Charlie Woods participated in his inaugural local qualifier for the U.S. Open held at Port St. Lucie.
At The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club, Woods struggled on the challenging course with a 74.6 rating and 141 slope while also facing tough competition, resulting in a score of nine-over-par 81.
After starting with a bogey, Woods struggled further by attaining a double-bogey at the second par-5. He finished the first nine holes in 40 strokes and then ended up scoring another 41 on the back nine.
In total, Woods recorded four bogeys and three doubles while managing only one birdie on the 195-yard par-3 fifth hole.
At The Legacy, a group of 84 golfers competed for five positions to progress to sectional qualifying. Michael Buttacavoli, a seasoned 36-year-old tour pro claimed the medal with an impressive score of 69. Scoring below par were only three other players during the event.
Woods has gained attention for the second qualifier in 2024, with his previous one being during February when he shot an 86 at a Monday qualifier for Cognizant Classic of PGA Tour.
Charlie was aiming to qualify at a much younger age than his dad had managed, in both instances. In contrast, Tiger Woods participated in his initial PGA Tour event when he reached 16 years old during the 1992 Nissan Open. After winning the U.S. Amateur championship of 1994, he qualified for his first major tournament – the Shinnecock-hosted U.S.Open- by being just19 year-old back in 1995’s edition..
