Nellyorda’s shot at winning the Women’s Open title at St. Andrews was ruined by her regrettable finish, making her exclaim, “Oh no, I really messed up!”
Nelly Korda, the top-ranked player in the world, had high hopes of achieving a remarkable feat by clinching her second major win at St. Andrews’ iconic Old Course and concluding an exceptional season on a victorious note. Unfortunately, those aspirations were abruptly crushed when she encountered adversity during the final stretch of Sunday’s round that ultimately dashed all chances of triumphing.
Throughout the tournament and the entire season, Korda’s inconsistent display was reflected by her roller-coaster final day at the 2024 AIG Women’s Open.
Korda had an exceptional year with six victories in seven LPGA events, including a Chevron Championship win in April where she earned her second major title.
Following her impressive run, Korda experienced a significant drop in form that resulted in frequent missed cuts. This poor performance extended to the next two majors as well. Unfortunately, during the final round of her Olympic bid for gold in Paris, she was hindered by an unfortunate shank on the 15th hole.
Despite heading into the final major of the year at Old Course as reigning World No. 1, Korda’s initial display showed promise in overcoming obstacles and securing a win yet again with two impressive rounds of 68; but soon after events took an unforeseen turn.
