Y.E. Yang beats Bernhard Langer in playoff to win first PGA Tour title

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Y.E. Yang forced a playoff with a 6-foot par putt for a 5-under 66 and made a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole against Bernhard Langer to win the Ascension Charity Classic on Sunday and claim his first PGA Tour title. The 67-year-old Langer was trying to win the 50-and-over division for the 18th consecutive season and nearly succeeded: He sank a 15-foot putt from the rough on the 18th hole at Norwood Hills and then birdied the 64th hole. Young’s par putt put him in the playoff at 13-under 200.

On the 18th hole, Langer hit his tee shot into a bunker and made a hybrid putt from about 15 feet. But the birdie attempt landed on the high side of the hole, allowing Young to make the winning putt.

The 52-year-old Ian is best known for winning the PGA Championship at Hazeltine in 2009 as the only player to overcome a 54-hole deficit to Tiger Woods in a major championship. “The PGA has been a long time coming,” said Young, who is in his third year on the PGA Tour Champions. “Today is a special day.”

After missing a playoff, Stuart Cink won his second consecutive PGA Tour Champions title with his latest Alley Challenge victory. Cink put two strokes on the green on the par-5 15th and sank two birdie putts to take the lead.

Cink is still in 17th place, one step behind Young and Langer. But his drive went wide to the right and fell just short of the green, his uphill chip stopped about 12 feet short of the target and his sinking par putt went over the edge of the hole. Young hit a 4-foot wedge for birdie, and the two-putt gave Young the lead heading into the 18th. Cink hit a greenside bunker and failed to make birdie, closing with a 67.
