Tiger Woods insults Colin Montgomerie after golfer says he’s retiring
Tiger Woods had some harsh words for Colin Montgomerie after the golf legend said it might be time to retire from the sport.
Woods told reporters that his three wins have earned him an exemption into The Open Championship, which begins on Thursday at Royal Troon Golf Club. And he highlighted Montgomery’s failure to win the tournament.
In an interview with The Times’ Rick Broadbent, Montgomerie reflected on Woods’ overall decline and the fact that he is now just a shadow of the dominant force he once was. “Every athlete has a time to say goodbye, but telling Tiger it’s time to say goodbye is very difficult,” Montgomery said. These guys only know Tiger Woods for missing the cut, and he’s better than that. »
From a fan standpoint, it’s disappointing to see Woods play such a limited schedule and then do so poorly when competing in notable events. He finished 60th at the Masters before missing the cut at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open this year. But that’s true of nearly every star in the sport: Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer missed out on plenty of majors in the twilight of their playing careers. Mikelson missed seven abbreviations for majority since the PGA championship of 2021 won.
Montgomery’s argument also assumes that things do not become better for Woods or that the stars will win to give it at least another memorable race. Tom Watson was 59 when he was the runner-up in the 2009 Open Championship.
Woods has unquestionably gained the right to end his career on his terms and utilize whatever tournament exemptions he carries. He’s always been popular, so event organizers are happy to have him participate.
Tiger’s legacy was established a long time ago, and his impact on golf will continue no matter what he does in the future.
