Tiger’s son Charlie Woods competes in preliminary qualifying for the PGA Tour’s Cognizant Classic

Charlie Woods, 15, the son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods, begins his quest to qualify for PGA Tour events this week with a shot at the Cognizant Classic. Charlie Woods begins to play Lost Lake Golf Club at Hob Sound, Florida, one of the four preliminary qualifications. Communication with 25 best players on each site will be sent to the final qualifying event on Monday. From there, four players will make it into the tournament, which will take place Feb. 29-March 3 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Charlie Woods, who will play in the 18-hole pre-qualifying event for the 2024 Cognizant Classic in Palm Beaches.
If the younger Woods can qualify for the Cognizant Classic — formerly known as the Honda Classic — he will make his PGA Tour debut at 15 years, 21 days, beating his father, whose first start came at 16 years, 1 month, 28 days in the 1992 Nissan Los Angeles Open at Riviera Country Club. Charlie Woods has been a perennial golf star, playing in the past four PNC Championships with his father, and he finished alone in a tie for 17th place at last fall’s Notah Begay III Junior National Golf Championship and helped his high school golf team win a state title. Joining Woods in the qualifying round will be Cameron, the 17-year-old son of PGA Tour pro Matt Kuchar, and Austin Lemieux, the 27-year-old son of Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux.
The 2024 Cognizant Classic will have a total prize purse of $9 million, with the winner receiving $1.62 million. The event will feature Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, Matt Fitzpatrick and reigning champion Chris Kirk.
