Tiger Woods says he has undergone successful back surgery.
Tiger Woods announced Friday that he has undergone successful back surgery after his injury-plagued season left him with recurring back spasms and pain.
The 48-year-old announced on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had undergone lumbar spinal microdecompression surgery for nerve compression in his lower back.“The surgery went well and I hope it will help relieve the back spasms and pain I have been experiencing for most of the 2024 season,” Woods said.
“I’m looking forward to rehabbing and preparing to return to a normal life, including golf.”This season will be the first time the 15-time major winner will play in all four majors since suffering serious leg injuries in a 2021 car accident that left him struggling to complete 72 holes over the four days of the tournament.
But he has failed to qualify in his last three attempts at the sport’s Grand Slams.Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi of the Hospital of Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed the surgery and “deemed it to be successful,” Woods’ statement added. It is the US golfer’s sixth back operation of his career and first since 2021.
Before July’s British Open, the 82-time PGA Tour winner was adamant he would play as long as he felt he could still win, despite calls from the likes of former world number two Colin Montgomerie to retire.
