Justin Rose gives entirely predictable response to Jon Rahm Ryder Cup question
England\’s Justin Rose has weighed in after Ian Poulter declared he still wants to be a Ryder Cup captain despite joining LIV Golf.
Justin Rose says it seems like \’a pretty straightforward equation\’ LIV Golf\’s Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton should settle their DP World Tour fines so they can be eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup. Doubts have been raised in recent months about whether Rahm will represent Team Europe at Bethpage Black next September.
To maintain his membership he needs to compete in at least three DP World Tour events by the end of the year. With his wife Kelly struggling with a difficult third pregnancy and contractual obligations with LIV, Rahm wasn’t sure if he’d be able to play those events.
Rahm told reporters before winning $22 million in Chicago last week that he actually plans to play the tournaments he needs in the coming months. But he caused a stir when he said he had no intention of paying the fine.
He appealed the sanction, thought to be around $1 million, at the last minute to keep his Ryder Cup hopes alive. Hatton is also appealing the fine, and Golf Magic understands those appeals will not be heard until at least 2025. It would not be surprising if both appeals are dismissed, given that the Panel of Arbitration for Sport ruled in favor of the European Tour Group on the matter in April 2023.
Rose has had an interest in recent events, having been teammates with both players at LIV in the 2023 Coppa Italia. Regarding English, this is the cost of doing business.
\ “There is a fairly simple path for them to be on the team,” Rose told journalists before the BMW PGA championship in Wentworth. “I think it all depends on their personal decision, but if they choose to cooperate or accept the existing system, I think they will definitely be part of the team.
“To be honest, I think so.”
Can Rose imagine a team without Rahm and Hatton? “I can’t speak for them,” Rose said.
He added: “Obviously if they decide not to do everything they can to get into the team, they obviously have very strong views on the structures that are in place.” “And I know how important the Ryder Cup is to both Tyrrell and John, so I’d be surprised if they didn’t understand that.
“But like I said, I don’t really know what they’re thinking. But of course there is a scenario, absolutely, where conceivably they might choose not to be on the team.\”
He added: \”That would be to Europe\’s detriment for sure. [They are] great players. And obviously, they got close. They had a great time together in Rome. They\’re a pairing.
\”Those types of connections are powerful. It is very difficult to recreate. Obviously, we hope we will find a natural couple next year, appear on the Veskage, and we will appear. “But when you have collaborative partnerships, that’s also a very important and powerful part of the team.
“I hope they’re there.”
