Simone Biles says it’s no big deal after video shows judges botched investigation could have won her another gold medal
11-time Olympic medalist says video shows she could have won her 12th medal if investigation conducted on her behalf had been recorded
Simone Biles is on the right track after a video surfaced showing she could have won another gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
If the judges had agreed and revised Biles’ scores, she would have beaten eventual winner Rebecca Andrade of Brazil to win her fourth gold medal of the tournament. Biles received 14.133 points in the floor exercise final with a difficulty score of 6.9. If the application had been submitted and her score corrected, she would have received full credit for the split and would have passed Andrade with 14.233 points. Andrade finished the competition in a time of 14.166 seconds.
When the Rumble controversy was brought up on Tuesday, September 9, 17, the 11-time Olympic medalist fell to Andrade again.
“Honestly, it’s not that big of a deal to me, Rebekah had the best sex anyway,” Biles, 27, wrote, adding a hand and heart emoji. “I’m disappointed that this issue wasn’t resolved, but I’m not upset about the outcome.”
Then the G.O.A.T. added, “But justice for Jordan, hear me out!!!!!!!!!!!!”
During the competition on August 5, the 23-year-old Chiles initially received a score that would have placed him in fifth place. In the video, Randi successfully petitioned the judges to reassess her difficulty rating, beating two Romanian gymnasts to win the bronze medal, which she was awarded at the medal ceremony.
However, a few days later, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled that Randi had submitted her petition four seconds too late, stripping Chile of its bronze medal. Following the CAS decision, the American was stripped of her medal and it was awarded to Romanian Ana Barbos.
In documents filed Monday, Chiles’ lawyers submitted footage from Religion of Sport, the production company behind the Biles documentary series, and director Katie Walsh, which they claim proves the “exact time” Randy asked on Chiles’ behalf. The filing on Monday claimed that Lundy first said she wanted “an investigation into Jordan” 49 seconds after the result was announced, well within the 60-second window allowed for appeals.
Biles and Chiles, who are currently competing on the Gold Over America Tour, are close friends and training partners. Biles recently elaborated on her position in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
“We saw what you did,” Biles said of Chiles. “And it’s an unfortunate circumstance because something like this has never happened before and it’s truly a shame, but we wish all three girls could get the medal and unfortunately in gymnastics that’s not the case.\”
She continued, \”Do we think they did the correct procedures to come to this ruling? No. That’s really why we want that justice for Jordan and why we’re going to keep supporting her and uplifting her.”
