Biles, who walked away from Paris with three gold medals, narrowly missed out on a fourth during the floor exercise final. She finished second to Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade, but new details from a Netflix documentary, Simone Biles: Rising, suggest that an inquiry into her score could have potentially altered the results in Biles’ favor.
The controversy centers around a video from the documentary that reveals Team USA coach Cecile Landi attempted to file an inquiry into Biles’ floor routine score within the permitted one-minute window. However, due to communication issues, the inquiry was never processed. Biles scored 14.133 on her routine, while Andrade secured gold with a score of 14.166. Had the inquiry been successful, Biles’ score could have been adjusted to 14.233, which would have given her the gold medal over Andrade.
Despite the uproar from fans who believe Biles was “robbed” of her fourth gold, the gymnast herself took the situation in stride. On social media, Biles expressed that while the unprocessed inquiry was “upsetting,” she wasn’t angry about the final results. She even praised Andrade, acknowledging that the Brazilian had the better routine that day. “Honestly, not a big deal for me. Rebeca had a better floor anyways,” Biles stated, demonstrating her typical humility and sportsmanship.
However, Biles has been more vocal about the injustice her teammate Jordan Chiles faced during the same competition. Chiles initially earned a bronze medal after a successful inquiry into her score, but the medal was later revoked when the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that the inquiry had been submitted four seconds late. Chiles has since filed a lawsuit to reclaim her medal, and Biles has publicly expressed her support, calling for “justice for Jordan”.
