Billy Horschel Triumphs Over Rory McIlroy in Playoff to Claim 2024 BMW PGA Championship
On Sunday, the latest chapter unfolded with a playoff against Billy Horschel, another former champion of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. Yet, the conclusion remained unchanged.
Horschel triumphed over McIlroy on the second playoff hole to secure victory, sinking an eagle putt on the par-5 18th. His shot found the center of the cup perfectly, while McIlroy’s attempt narrowly missed to the right.
Horschel needed to birdie the 18th hole in regulation play to force a playoff with McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence. During the first playoff hole, Lawrence hit his third shot into the water and failed to advance to the second playoff hole.
McIlroy had an opportunity to secure the victory in regulation play, but his birdie attempt fell short. In the first playoff hole, both Horschel and McIlroy managed to make birdies; however, it was Horschel who ultimately claimed the title, adding yet another “what-if” moment to McIlroy’s 2024 season.
