Things just seem to keep getting worse for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson.
After two disastrous seasons early in his tenure with the Browns, many believed the 2024 NFL season would be a breakout year for Watson. On a recent episode of First Take, Smith gave Watson a free pass, saying he was “very disgusted” with the Cleveland signal-caller and thought the Houston Texans version of Watson was gone.
“I don’t know what happened to him since then,” Smith said, referring to Watson’s days with the Texans. \ “But the only thing we know about him is that things have gone, but also his game. Because we have not seen this quota, since he went from Houston.”
Of course, Smith had in mind the accusations of sexual misconduct against Watson several years ago, which were all settled. However, new allegations against Watson have emerged, and this may not be the end of his legal troubles.
In terms of on-field play, the 28-year-old has been mediocre through his first three games of 2024, completing 57.8 percent of his passes with a passer grade of 71.4 while totaling 551 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
Given the litany of injuries that have plagued the Browns’ offense this season, it’s hard to put all the blame on Watson. But, based on how badly he played in his first two years in Cleveland, he will definitely not receive much freedom. A fully guaranteed transaction in the amount of 230 million dollars, which he signed with browsing after acquiring in 2022, also does not help.
