Golf icon Jack Nicklaus was overcome with emotion on CBS during the final round of the 2024 Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. He tearfully announced that his beloved wife, Barbara, will be honored as the winner of next year’s tournament in 2025.
During Sunday’s CBS final round broadcast, Nicklaus announced the news alongside commentator Jim Nantz. Overcome with emotion, he said through tears, “I can’t tell you that, Jim.”
“It’s Barbara Nicklaus. It’s difficult to move past that fact. I apologize, but Barbara held great significance for this tournament. While everyone respected Jack Nicklaus, it was Barbara who had everything.”
The captain was confident that Barbara would secure victory in the special 50th commemorative race. “I broke down and cried that night, and I’m still crying now.”
Nantz acknowledged, “We completely understand. It’s an excellent choice. You were the victor in the 25th edition.”
He stated, “There is no Barbara tournament.”

They have five children and 22 grandchildren: Jack, Steven, Nancy, Gary, and Michael. Nicklaus established the Memorial Tournament in 1976 on a course he designed at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio.
