Scheffler will play in an exhibition match against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas on Dec. 17. The 18-hole event will pit two of the PGA Tour’s best players against two of the biggest names in the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series, and organizers of the televised event have already announced the venue and date. Details of the tournament, called “The Showdown,” were announced as talks continue between the PGA Tour and LIV backer the Saudi Arabian Investment Fund (PIF) over a possible merger.

The format of the tournament has yet to be determined. Shadow Creek Golf Course previously hosted the first version of “The Match,” the precursor to “The Showdown” between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

World No. 1 Scheffler has won eight tournaments this year, including the Augusta Masters in April and Olympic gold in Paris, while four-time major champion McIlroy has had success at the Dubai Desert Classic, Zurich New Orleans Classic and the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.

McIlroy also finished second in the US Open and the Irish Open, and tied for runner-up spot at the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

DeChambeau edged out world number three McIlroy to take victory at the US Open at Pinehurst in June and Koepka is a five-time major winner. With LIV golfers banned from PGA Tour events, major championships have become the only opportunity for all of the sport’s top players to compete in recent years.

Therefore, LIV golfers have limited opportunities to earn ranking points.
