“I looked to him even after one of the bar mistakes” – Simone Biles explains how husband Jonathan Owens has become her ‘comfort person
Simone Biles recently opened up about her husband, Jonathan Owens, being her comfort person. The gymnast is currently performing in the Gold Over America Tour, and Owens is in the middle of his NFL season.
The couple officially met through a dating app called Raya in March 2020, and the first move was initiated by Biles. She texted him first, and they hung out together a week or two later. Their bond strengthened as they spent increasing amounts of time together amid the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the start of their relationship that same year.
Biles publicly announced her relationship with Owens in August 2020, sharing adorable photos of them together on Instagram. The couple continued to share glimpses of their relationship on social media and spent the holidays together that year. They got engaged in February 2022 and got married on April 22, 2023, in an intimate courthouse wedding in Texas.
Since then, the two athletes have been each other’s biggest supporters. Be it Biles’ Olympics performances or Owens’ NFL matches, they cheer for each other the loudest. In a recent interview with Inside Gymnastics, Simone Biles shared how Jonathan Owens became a source of comfort for her.
“He’s my comfort person. I looked to him even after I had one of the bar mistakes (at the Olympics). I just looked at him and he’s like, ‘You’re fine, calm down,'” she said.
In episode 3 of the second season of her Netflix series, Simone Biles Rising, Simone Biles lashed out at fans for criticizing Jonathan Owens. The NFL player once made a bold statement about not knowing who the gymnast was and said, “It’s really how she pulled me, man,” in the podcast ‘The Pivot.’ He also called himself the ‘catch,’ which irked all the fans, following which they passed mean comments about the 29-year-old.
Biles took a hit at the fans, saying:
“Social media gives them this false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function. Most of the time, they don’t understand the mental toll it takes, especially going into the Olympic year. I know we signed up to be judged in the gym, but when you guys are gonna talk about my him or my family, yeah, I’m gonna come at you guys.”
