They’re not my biological kids” – When Simone Biles’ mother opened up about how difficult it was to emotionally cater to the gymnast’s needs
“Simone acknowledged that it was difficult for miwa to bail and first create a natural relationship between mothers. Her husband, Ronald Birz and her grandfather Simona, did not take gymnasts at the age of six. Simone’s biological mother, Shannon Biles, struggled with alcohol and drug addiction and was unable to care for her four children, who were also struggling to provide for themselves. Shannon’s neighbors called social services, who placed the children in foster care. Sunny-Sisters often visited their grandparents, Nelli and Ronald Bils before receiving Simon and Adria three years later. Two other brothers and sisters, Tevin and Ashley, were accepted by their cousin. Neli and Ronald already had a son, Biles Jr., but they still raised Simone and Adria with all their heart. But in a June 2021 episode of her Facebook Watch series, “Simone vs. Herself,” Neli admitted that she struggled to create a natural mother-daughter bond with her kids and felt emotionally drained. “I knew I had barriers because they’re not my biological children. I do all the things that come with parenting and motherhood, but emotionally I have to be at 100 percent, and I wasn’t,” she said. [16:00 onwards]

She added that she used to pray for that bonding before it eventually happened one day.
\”I remember praying for that bonding because telling them that you love them and care for them, that\’s all words. “But one day you wake up and realize that you could do anything for these kids, that you could die for them, and when that feeling comes, you realize that you’re a real mother,” Simone Biles’ mother added.

After being adopted by her grandparents, Simone Biles had little contact with her biological mother, Shannon Biles. However, Shannon recently expressed his desire to repair and asked gymnasts to forgive him.
In an interview with Daily Mail in August 2024, she said:
“I want to make peace with Simone personally -I am waiting for her and her sister, Adriya. I speak more with Adria than Simone. I would just ask him to forgive me. Can you go ahead? Don’t judge me in my past. Let’s move on.
Biles admitted that she occasionally speaks with Shannon on birthdays and holidays, but made it clear that she bears no grudge against her biological mother. In her 2016 memoir, The Courage to Fly: A Body in Motion, a Life in Balance, Biles wrote about her relationship with Shannon:
“Sometimes I feel a little sad for her. Not that she wanted to move back to Ohio State, but she wishes she had made better decisions when she was younger.
