Lewis Hamilton has matched the legendary Michael Schumacher, with both achieving seven Formula 1 World Championship titles. Even after Schumacher’s retirement in 2013, Hamilton has yet to exceed the German driver’s record for championship wins. As a result of his recent move to Ferrari at age 39, former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher discussed the differences between these two iconic racers.

Lewis Hamilton experienced a period of complete dominance with Mercedes from 2013 to 2020, similar to Michael Schumacher’s time with Ferrari from 2000 to 2005. However, according to Ralf Schumacher, the key difference lies in their approach—Michael was known for his ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and contribute significantly to car development. In contrast, it’s been noted by Mercedes’ engineers that Hamilton has not consistently provided precise feedback needed for team advancements.

The main distinction is that Michael collaborated with the engineers to tailor the car precisely to his driving style. Lewis, on the other hand, has not been able to achieve this level of customization according to what Mercedes’ engineers have mentioned if you pay close attention.

Furthermore, Schumacher noted that Mercedes boss Toto Wolff emphasized the importance of a driver pushing to their limits and providing feedback to the engineers. However, he believed that these comments from Wolff were made because Hamilton was unable to meet those expectations.

Toto Wolff has emphasized repeatedly that it’s the driver’s responsibility to push the throttle while the engineers focus on developing the car. However, he mentions this partly because his drivers seem unable to provide accurate feedback.
